Jaclyn Smith Reveals Surprising Proposition From Her ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Co-Star
LOS ANGELES — Decades after Charlie’s Angels became a television phenomenon, Jaclyn Smith is looking back on some of the more unexpected moments from behind the scenes — including a personal proposition involving one of her former co-stars.
In her new memoir, I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie, Smith recalls that actress Tanya Roberts, who joined Charlie’s Angels during its final season, once proposed that Smith join her and Roberts’ husband, Barry, in a threesome. Smith declined the invitation.

A Candid Moment Between Co-Stars
Smith, who played Kelly Garrett throughout the show’s entire five-season run, said she nevertheless admired Roberts’ openness and directness.
The two actresses developed a close friendship while working together on the series. Roberts portrayed Julie Rogers during the show’s fifth and final season after previously appearing in other television and film roles.
Smith’s recollection is presented as part of a broader look back at the relationships and experiences that shaped her years on the iconic series.

More Than Just a TV Show
Charlie’s Angels originally aired from 1976 to 1981 and became one of television’s defining shows of the era. Smith was the only original female lead to remain with the series for all five seasons, while the cast changed several times over its run.
Her memoir also revisits the intense fame surrounding the actresses, the pressures of being a television star and the strong bond Smith says existed among many of the women involved with the show.

Remembering Tanya Roberts
Roberts died in 2021 at age 65 following a blood infection. Smith has continued to remember her former co-star fondly, making the story in her memoir as much a reflection on their friendship as it is a surprising Hollywood anecdote.
Now 80, Smith is using her memoir to offer a candid look at the life behind one of television’s most recognizable franchises — including stories that remained private for decades.
