U.S. Army Trainee Ocean K. Winfrey Dies After Being Struck on Interstate 44
The U.S. Army community is mourning the death of Pfc. Ocean K. Winfrey, a 27-year-old basic training soldier who was struck and killed on Interstate 44 near Fort Sill, Oklahoma, on September 11, 2026.

Winfrey had only recently joined the Army and arrived at Fort Sill earlier in September to begin Basic Combat Training. His death has left fellow soldiers, drill sergeants, and military personnel grieving as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Soldier Killed Before Sunrise Near Fort Sill
According to reporting from Task & Purpose, Winfrey was walking along Interstate 44 near Fort Sill before sunrise when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 4:45 a.m. near mile marker 41, close to the installation’s Key Gate.

Fort Sill officials confirmed that Winfrey died in the incident. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, with assistance from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division.

Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances of the collision.

Newly Enlisted Soldier Had Just Begun Basic Training
Winfrey enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 2026 as a network communications specialist, identified by military occupational specialty 25H.

He arrived at Fort Sill in September and was assigned to Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 79th Field Artillery Regiment, 434th Field Artillery Brigade, where he was scheduled to complete Basic Combat Training.

His death came only a short time after he began his military journey, making the loss especially painful for the unit and those who had recently welcomed him into the Army.

Fort Sill Brigade Mourns His Loss
Col. Tony H. Brunner, commander of the 434th Field Artillery Brigade, expressed condolences to Winfrey’s family, loved ones, and fellow soldiers.

Brunner said the brigade deeply felt the loss of a soldier who had chosen to serve and become part of something greater than himself.

The Army has also arranged support for those affected by the tragedy. Chaplains, behavioral health professionals, and command teams are providing grief counseling and assistance to trainees, cadre, and staff members.

Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Army Criminal Investigation Division continue examining the incident. Fort Sill has stated that additional details will not be released while the investigation remains underway.

Questions surrounding the circumstances of the fatal incident remain unanswered, and officials have not announced further findings.

For Winfrey’s family and the Fort Sill community, the focus now remains on remembering a young soldier whose military service had only just begun.
