Ashley Flynn was found fatally shot lying down “in a sleeping position” in her home in February, according to prosecutors

As his murder trial continues following opening statements last week, American Idol alum Caleb Flynn appeared distraught as jurors were presented with crime scene photos showing his deceased wife Ashley Flynn.

Caleb, 40, is standing trial on allegations he killed Ashley in the middle of the night on Feb. 16 and staged the scene in their Tipp City, Ohio home.

Ashley was found slain in their residence after Caleb frantically called 911 to report an intruder.

On Monday, Sept. 21, when prosecutors presented photos of Ashley’s deceased body in the courtroom, Caleb appeared to break down, much in line with his actions on the night of the killing when he was seen on bodycam footage wailing, asking “is she gone?” and at one point appearing to throw up.

Prosecutors presented photos from the couple’s bedroom, where they say Ashley was “lying in bed in a sleeping position” when, they allege, Caleb “executed” her, according to Court TV, which has streamed the trial online.

“Ashley was shot in the middle of the night — twice, in the back of her head — lying in bed in a sleeping position,” prosecutors alleged in court last week. The couple’s two young daughters were in the next room during the killing.

On Monday, as the deputy coroner recounted the autopsy report, Caleb rubbed his nose with a tissue and appeared to cry, occasionally darting his eyes to the side, although it wasn’t clear where in relation to the witness he was seated.

“You’re seeing hair and brain matter and blood,” the coroner told the court, as Caleb continued crying with his eyes closed, clenching his jaws at times.

The witness then told the court he initially could not see how many gunshot wounds Ashley suffered because “hair, brain matter and blood [were] obscuring” the gunshot wounds to the back of her head.

Caleb could be seen shaking his head as the examiner is presented with more photos of the crime scene showing the gunshot wounds to Ashley’s head.

Caleb appeared to wince when the coroner details a black eye Ashley suffered as a result of the gunshot injury.

Prosecutors previously told the jury that the investigation unearthed scores of text messages Caleb allegedly sent to his mistress expressing his wish to kill Ashley.

Ashley was a devoted mom to two daughters, a youth coach and a beloved fixture in the community, her loved ones previously shared exclusively with PEOPLE.

“She had this dynamic personality,” Abigail Hufford, director at LifeWise Academy, where Ashley also taught Bible studies, told PEOPLE in February.

Ashley was also a supportive wife and cheered Caleb on during his brief stint on the 12th season of American Idol. In a 2013 interview on the show, Caleb said what made him unique was his faith and his love for his wife.

Caleb has been charged with murder, aggravated murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and witness intimidation, according to his online court records. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
