An Ohio doctor who once co-authored research examining violent and homicidal teenagers was allegedly killed in a shocking murder plot involving her own teenage daughter, according to authorities and court records.

Tamela Dutcher, 55, was fatally shot inside her Delaware County home on Aug. 14 after prosecutors say her 18-year-old daughter, Bryanna Dutcher, helped arrange an attack involving her secret boyfriend and another man.

Police allege the deadly scheme began after a seemingly ordinary argument between mother and daughter over household chores.

According to court documents, Bryanna had been secretly dating Christian Evans, 20. She allegedly feared her parents would discover the relationship because she believed they would object to her dating a Black man and might force her to leave the home.

On the night of the shooting, Bryanna allegedly told Evans about the argument she had with her mother earlier that day.

Authorities say Evans responded with a chilling suggestion.

“If I were you, I would have killed her,” Evans allegedly told her, according to an affidavit cited by Oxygen.

Evans then allegedly enlisted his 21-year-old roommate, Dajameous Payne, to help carry out the attack.

Shortly after midnight on Aug. 14, Evans and Payne allegedly arrived at the Dutcher residence and waited outside while Bryanna provided information about where her parents were inside.

According to investigators, Bryanna texted Evans to tell him that her mother was in the living room while her father was downstairs.

Evans allegedly replied that he and Payne were preparing to enter the home, putting on gloves and planning to “take them both out at the same time,” according to the affidavit.

The two men then allegedly entered the residence.

Tamela was sitting on the couch when the attackers opened fire, according to authorities.

She was struck in the face by a gunshot.

Her husband rushed toward her after hearing the gunfire, but authorities say the attackers also fired at him.

The shot missed.

Evans and Payne then allegedly fled the home.

Emergency responders rushed Tamela to a hospital, but she died from her injuries.

Investigators later turned their attention toward Bryanna, who allegedly attempted to conceal what she knew about the attack.

Police said she initially claimed she had not seen anyone before the shooting and allegedly attempted to direct suspicion toward a friend of her mother who reportedly owed her money.

“It is believed that Bryanna repeatedly lied to law enforcement about her knowledge of the circumstances involving this incident, which delayed identifying leads and suspects,” investigators wrote in the affidavit.

Authorities eventually identified Evans and Payne as suspects.

Investigators allegedly found additional evidence linking Evans to the shooting after observing him disposing of a garbage bag near his apartment.

Inside the bag, police allegedly found a gun holster and pants.

Evans’ father also reportedly told investigators that his son sent him a message saying he had “f-ked up.”

Phone location data allegedly placed Evans near the Dutcher home around the time of the shooting.

Investigators also obtained messages from Bryanna’s phone that allegedly included Evans discussing what would happen “once they both pass away.”

Another message allegedly suggested that Bryanna should obtain a gun.

The case has taken on an especially chilling dimension because of Tamela Dutcher’s own academic work.

Dutcher co-authored a 2002 paper titled “The violent and homicidal adolescent. Hearts darkened before time,” which examined patterns among young people involved in homicide.

The study discussed the differences between male and female juvenile killers and noted that the relatively small number of female youths who commit homicide often target members of their own families.

The research also examined demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with juvenile homicide.

Now, authorities allege Dutcher herself became the victim of a violent crime involving her own teenage daughter.

Bryanna Dutcher, Evans and Payne have all been charged with aggravated murder.

Bryanna also faces an obstruction of justice charge.

Prosecutors allege the three acted “purposely, and with prior calculation and design” in causing Dutcher’s death.

All three suspects are being held at the Delaware County Jail.

Evans’ attorney filed a “suggestion of incompetency” Friday, arguing that his client may not be mentally competent to stand trial and should undergo an evaluation by a physician while in custody.

The allegations against the defendants remain accusations, and they are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
