Shay Martin Remarries One Year After Husband Tanner’s Death: “Love Does Not Erase Love”

When Shay Martin revealed that she had married again, she knew the announcement would bring questions.
Only a little more than a year had passed since her husband, Tanner Martin, died at age 30 following a five-year battle with stage 4 colon cancer. Their relationship, his illness and the birth of their daughter, AmyLou, had been witnessed by a large online community that followed the couple through some of the most joyful and painful moments of their lives.
For Shay, however, beginning a new marriage does not mean closing the door on the one she shared with Tanner.
In an emotional Instagram video posted Sunday, Aug. 2, the influencer and podcast host confirmed that she had remarried. She described the decision not as leaving grief behind, but as allowing love and loss to exist together.
“Moving forward is not the same as moving on,” she told followers.
Shay also emphasized a belief at the center of her new chapter: one love does not have to replace another.
Tanner Had Hopes for Shay and AmyLou’s Future
Shay said she chose to speak publicly because she understood that many people who followed her family’s story would be curious about where life had taken her.
But she also wanted the explanation to come directly from her.
During Tanner’s illness, the couple had conversations about what the future might look like after his death. Those discussions included not only Shay’s life, but the life of their daughter, AmyLou.
According to Shay, Tanner hoped that she would eventually meet someone who could love AmyLou as his own while also respecting the family Tanner and Shay had created together.
That wish became deeply important as Shay considered whether she could open her heart again.
Her new husband, she said, has never asked her to abandon Tanner’s memory or pretend that her first marriage did not exist. Instead, he honors the love Shay continues to carry and recognizes Tanner’s permanent place in AmyLou’s life.
Shay said he also loves her daughter in the way Tanner would have wanted.
The relationship therefore was not built on erasing the past. It grew around an acceptance of it.

She Once Believed She Would Never Marry Again
During Tanner’s years of cancer treatment, Shay imagined a very different future for herself.
She believed she would remain alone after his death and had accepted that possibility long before it became reality.
Even while Tanner was still alive, she remembered thinking that remarriage would never be an option. She expected to live with her grief without allowing another romantic relationship into her life.
Over time, that belief changed.
Shay came to see love not as something limited, where affection for one person must be reduced to make space for someone else. She began to believe there was enough love to carry Tanner’s memory while building a future with another partner.
She also made clear that marriage had not ended her mourning.
Shay said she would never “graduate” from grief. Tanner’s absence remains part of her daily life, and no new relationship can remove the pain of losing him.
Her remarriage represents movement, but not an escape.
A New Husband Who Makes Space for the Past
In the video, Shay spoke warmly about the support she has received from her new husband.
She said he respects the history she shared with Tanner and celebrates the love that remains. Rather than treating Tanner as someone who must disappear from family conversations, he acknowledges him as AmyLou’s father and as an enduring part of the family’s story.
That acceptance appears to be central to why Shay felt able to marry again.
She was not searching for someone to take Tanner’s place. She wanted a partner who understood that no one could.
Her new marriage adds another relationship to her life without rewriting the one that came before it.
“Love does not erase love,” Shay said in a statement announcing the marriage.
She added that she will always love Tanner and that he will always remain AmyLou’s dad.
The emotional video reflected that coexistence, combining footage of Shay’s life with Tanner and scenes from her relationship with her new partner.
Placed together, the images presented her life not as separate stories competing against one another, but as chapters connected by love, family and grief.

Their Online Story Began With Tanner’s Cancer Battle
Shay and Tanner developed a large and supportive online following after beginning to document his cancer journey.
Tanner was diagnosed in 2020, when he was only 25.
The couple allowed followers into the reality of his illness, posting medical updates and sharing how cancer affected their marriage and plans for the future.
In February 2023, doctors told Tanner that his cancer could no longer be cured. At the time, they estimated that he might have between two and five years left to live.
Despite that devastating prognosis, the couple continued building their family.
In November 2024, they announced that Shay was pregnant.
AmyLou was born in May 2025, giving Tanner the chance to become a father shortly before his death.
The following month, his death was announced through a video he had recorded in advance.
Tanner was 30.
For the people who had followed the couple through years of treatment, the announcement carried an unusual intimacy. They had watched him confront mortality, prepare for fatherhood and speak openly about the life he knew he might have to leave behind.

An Online Account Becomes a Place for Grief
After Tanner’s death, Shay continued using the account they had built together.
Its purpose gradually changed.
What began as a space for documenting a cancer journey became a memorial to Tanner and a community for people living with loss.
Shay shared her own grief while also connecting with others who had lost spouses, relatives and close friends. Earlier in 2026, she expanded that work by launching a podcast titled Grief Witnessed.
On the show, she invites guests to discuss the deaths of people they loved and creates space for their pain to be heard.
Shay has said that one of the most healing things a person can sometimes offer is simply the willingness to listen.
Her experience has also led her into colorectal cancer advocacy.
In March, during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Shay spoke before members of Congress on behalf of Fight Colorectal Cancer, sharing what she had learned through Tanner’s diagnosis.
She also partnered with Guardant Health to advocate for a blood-based colorectal cancer screening test.
Tanner’s death therefore continues to shape both her private grief and her public purpose.
Her Family Comes Before Public Curiosity
Because Shay and Tanner shared so much of their life online, some followers may feel emotionally connected to their story.
Shay acknowledged that connection, saying she remains grateful to those who genuinely care about her and AmyLou.
But she also drew a boundary.
The account she created with Tanner was never intended to become a reality show in which the public was entitled to every personal detail.
She said she would continue sharing her life only in ways that felt appropriate for herself and her family.
Her first responsibility, she emphasized, is to them—not to the internet.
That means the Instagram video represents what she currently feels comfortable revealing about Tanner’s wishes, her remarriage and the family’s new chapter.
She encouraged followers to listen to the full message rather than forming conclusions from a single announcement.

Carrying Tanner’s Final Advice Forward
Shay’s response to potential judgment reflected one of the values she most strongly associates with Tanner.
She said his legacy was rooted in kindness, hope and the willingness to assume good intentions in others.
That is the legacy she intends to preserve.
Tanner left his followers with a simple piece of advice: be kind and assume good intent.
Shay repeated those words while asking people to approach her decision with compassion.
Her remarriage does not mean her grief has disappeared or that Tanner’s life has become less important. It means she has chosen to continue living while holding tightly to what came before.
AmyLou will grow up knowing Tanner as her father. His story will remain part of the family’s identity. Shay’s new husband will join that story rather than replacing it.
The path ahead will still include sorrow, memory and moments when loss feels immediate.
It will also include companionship, parenthood and the possibility of happiness.
Shay once believed grief would require her to remain alone forever. She now understands it differently.
She can miss Tanner and love someone new. She can honor one marriage while building another. She can move forward without pretending she has moved on.
Her life after Tanner is not a rejection of their love.
It is evidence that the love they shared—and the future he hoped she would find—continues to guide her.
