PennWest Soccer Player Karoline Heintz Dies in Tragic Incident; Boyfriend Charged

CALIFORNIA, Pa. — An 18-year-old college soccer player was found dead inside her vehicle in southwestern Pennsylvania, and her boyfriend has been charged with homicide, authorities said.

Karoline Heintz, a recent Peters Township High School graduate who was preparing to begin her freshman year at PennWest University California, was found shortly after midnight Thursday near the California Borough Public Library. Her family had become concerned after she failed to return to campus and used a tracking device to locate her vehicle.

Pennsylvania State Police allege that Heintz had met her boyfriend, 18-year-old Royce Moser, at his father’s home in North Strabane Township on Wednesday evening to discuss their relationship.

According to investigators, the conversation became tense. Police allege that Moser went inside the house, returned with a kitchen knife and fatally attacked Heintz.

Police Say Mother Became Involved

Investigators allege that after the incident, Moser drove Heintz’s vehicle to the home of his mother, Rachel Moser, in Beallsville.

According to court documents, Rachel Moser allegedly helped her son clean the vehicle and his clothing before the two eventually left the vehicle near the university area.

Police also allege that she disposed of the knife and helped Moser change clothes. Rachel Moser faces charges including hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and obstruction-related offenses.

Both mother and son were taken into custody.

A Young Athlete Remembered

Heintz had recently graduated from Peters Township High School and had signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer at PennWest California.

Her soccer community has remembered her as a talented defender and leader. The Victory Soccer Club, where she played and captained the girls’ team, has mourned the loss of a young athlete whose college career was just beginning.

PennWest said it was deeply saddened by Heintz’s death and extended its condolences to her family, friends and everyone affected by the tragedy. The university also said the incident occurred off campus and that its police department was cooperating with Pennsylvania State Police.

Investigation Continues

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Heintz’s death.

Moser faces a criminal homicide charge, while his mother faces separate charges related to the alleged effort to conceal evidence. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

For Heintz’s family, teammates and friends, the case marks the devastating loss of an 18-year-old who was preparing to begin a new chapter of her life.

Her college soccer career never had the chance to begin.
