Some heroes leave behind medals and titles. Others leave behind the memories of everyone whose lives they touched.

Staff Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad was one of those heroes.

At just 28 years old, Angel dedicated her life to serving others. She joined the U.S. Army because she wanted her life to have purpose — to protect people and make a difference in the world.

Born in Trinidad and raised in Queens, New York, Angel carried the dreams of a young woman who wanted to serve something greater than herself. Her family said she had always been someone with a calm heart, a caring spirit and a desire to help others.

Her military journey began in 2019, and she served with the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment. She spent years supporting missions overseas, continuing a commitment she had dreamed of since she was young.

On July 17, 2026, Angel was killed during an attack while serving at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. Her loss left behind a family, a military community and a hometown struggling to say goodbye.

At her funeral in Queens, loved ones remembered not only the soldier who wore the uniform, but the woman behind it — someone who loved sunsets, the ocean, music and spending time with the people she cared about.

Her mother, Carol Acevedo, shared the pain of losing her daughter while honoring the courage that defined Angel’s life.

“My daughter was a real hero, and I will miss her dearly,” she said.

Friends described Angel as a person who stood up for others, someone with a gentle heart and a strength that inspired everyone around her.

Today, Staff Sgt. Angel Rampersad is remembered not only as a soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice, but as a daughter, sister and friend whose kindness will continue to live on.

Her uniform may be gone.

But her courage, her smile and her legacy will never be forgotten.
