San Clemente Father Left Paralyzed After Trying to Rescue Children From Rip Current

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — A California father of five is recovering from a devastating spinal injury after rushing into the ocean to help children caught in a rip current.

Josh Collette, 42, was with his family at Riviera Beach in San Clemente on Aug. 15 when he noticed children struggling in the water. He immediately went into the ocean to help.

Serious Spinal Injury

During the rescue attempt, Collette struck a submerged area and suffered a severe neck and spinal-cord injury.

Doctors later determined that he had broken two vertebrae and sustained significant damage to his spinal cord. He is currently unable to move or feel below his shoulders.

His wife, Rose, has remained by his side during his hospitalization and has helped communicate with him while he recovers.

The Children Survived

Despite the tragic outcome for Collette, the children he was trying to help survived.

Collette, who is an experienced swimmer and surfer, has said that he would still make the same decision to help someone in danger.

His wife described him as someone who has always been willing to step in when others need assistance.

Community Rallies Around the Family

The accident has brought an outpouring of support for the Collette family.

Friends and members of the local community have helped care for the couple’s five children, provide meals and assist with everyday responsibilities while Josh remains hospitalized.

A fundraising campaign has also been established to help with his medical care, rehabilitation and potential transfer to a specialized facility in Colorado. More than $200,000 had been raised by Aug. 25.

A Long Road Ahead

Collette faces a lengthy recovery and extensive rehabilitation.

Although his physical condition remains serious, his family says he has maintained a positive outlook and has been encouraged by the support surrounding him.

For the Collette family, the incident has brought an enormous challenge — but also a powerful reminder of the community’s willingness to help.

Josh’s actions ultimately helped the children escape the dangerous water, while his own recovery now depends on medical care, rehabilitation and the continued support of his family and community.
