Hayden Panettiere Fans Call for Neutrogena Boycott After Actress’s Memoir Revelations
NEW YORK — A wave of backlash has erupted against skincare giant Neutrogena following the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, as fans revive allegations that the company ended her decade-long partnership after she publicly revealed her struggle with postpartum depression.
The renewed controversy stems from Panettiere’s 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, and one of her final podcast interviews, in which she claimed Neutrogena dropped her as a brand ambassador after she spoke honestly about her mental health in 2015.
A 10-Year Partnership That Ended Abruptly
Panettiere became the face of Neutrogena in 2005 and remained one of the brand’s most recognizable ambassadors for roughly a decade.
In her memoir, she recalled appearing on Live with Kelly and Michael after the birth of her daughter, Kaya, where she openly discussed experiencing postpartum depression. She said the conversation was spontaneous and that she never imagined it would jeopardize her career.
“Neutrogena canceled my long-standing contract,” she wrote, describing it as another painful setback during an already difficult year.
She later expanded on the story during an appearance on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast, saying she was stunned when her representative told her the comments had allegedly violated a morality clause in her contract.

Fans Flood Social Media
Following Panettiere’s death on August 16, thousands of supporters began calling for a boycott of Neutrogena across Reddit, Threads and TikTok.
Many users criticized the company for allegedly distancing itself from an actress who had spoken publicly about a common maternal mental health condition rather than supporting her.
On Threads, one of Neutrogena’s older beauty posts became flooded with responses, with users writing messages such as, “Friends don’t drop friends when they’re suffering.”
Google search interest in the phrase “Neutrogena boycott” also surged dramatically in the days after her death, reflecting the growing online movement.
Parent Company Feels Market Pressure
The controversy has also reached Wall Street.
Shares of Kenvue Inc., Neutrogena’s parent company and the owner of brands including Tylenol, Band-Aid and Aveeno, slipped by more than 2% as the backlash intensified. The stock later recovered some of its losses, although analysts have not attributed the decline solely to the boycott campaign.
As of the latest reports, Neutrogena has not issued a public statement responding to Panettiere’s allegations or the renewed calls for a boycott.

A Conversation Bigger Than One Brand
The backlash has evolved beyond a dispute between an actress and a beauty company.
Mental health advocates argue that Panettiere’s story highlights how women have historically faced stigma for discussing postpartum depression, a condition that affects many new mothers but often goes misunderstood.
In interviews promoting her memoir earlier this year, Panettiere said she hoped sharing her experience would help normalize conversations about maternal mental health and encourage women to seek support without shame.
Whether the online boycott has a lasting commercial impact remains uncertain. But for many of Panettiere’s fans, the campaign has become a way of honoring an actress they believe was punished for telling the truth about her own mental health journey.
Her story has transformed what was once a little-known contract dispute into a broader discussion about compassion, corporate responsibility and the importance of speaking openly about postpartum depression.
