AT least one person has been killed and five injured, including two police officers, as a mass shooter opened fire at a block of flats.

Cops rushed to control the active shooter situation in Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon, with the FBI pledging support.

Conflicting reports suggested that several civilians were killed, KSTP news reported.

A law enforcement source told the network that several civilians had been killed in the attack.

KSTP reported that one officer had been shot in the stomach and the other shot in the leg at the shooting near 15 East Grant Street.

Police did not immediately say how many people were shot, but the Hennepin County Medical Center spokesman Jonathan Comito told the Star Tribune the hospital had received seven patients, one dead.

FBI director Kash Patel wrote on X: “FBI is aware of the shooting in Minneapolis involving law enforcement and our personnel are responding — we will offer any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities.”

The unidentified shooter is reportedly dead at the scene.

Photos show a huge police presence in the city.

The City of Minneapolis confirmed that the incident had multiple victims, and urged residents to avoid the area of the Shoreline Plaza apartment building.

Building resident Umecua Agnew told the Star Tribune the shooting was “terrifying”.

She was in the lift when the shooting began, and said: “It was three adults and one child in the elevator, we were all together and when we got to the first floor it was when we heard the massive shooting.”

Umecua ran and hid in the bathroom before another resident helped her flee.

She said: “I just thank God for being alive because that could have been me or he could have killed another girl or her mom or anybody that could have got shot right there.”

Witnesses said the shooter was on a high floor of the block.

Social media videos showed police aiming rifles upward at the building.

Anthony Strong said he was smoking behind the building when he heard the “pop-pop-pop-pop” of shots going off.

He said he went upstairs and saw several people lying on the floor, adding: “I’m trying to process it.”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said state officials are on the ground at the scene of the shooting.

He added: “Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon.

“Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”

People have been asked to avoid the area from 12th Street to Franklin Avenue and Hennepin Avenue to Third Avenue South, with the Hyatt Regency hotel on lockdown.

Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth said she is “praying for the victims of this heinous crime“.

She wrote on social media: “I’m incredibly thankful for the massive response of our brave law enforcement officers.”
