A California father of five is facing a long and difficult recovery after a selfless act of courage left him with a life-changing injury.

Josh Collette, 42, from San Clemente, was enjoying a family day at Riviera Beach on Aug. 15 when he saw a young child struggling in a dangerous rip current.

Without hesitation, Josh rushed into the water to help.

Witnesses said the child’s mother had already entered the ocean trying to reach the child, but Josh ran past and jumped in, determined to help bring the child back safely.

The rescue was successful — the child made it out of the water alive.

But moments after entering the ocean, Josh struck a sandbar or rocks beneath the waves, suffering a devastating spinal injury.

Beachgoers quickly pulled him from the water, and Josh was rushed for emergency medical care.

Doctors later delivered heartbreaking news: Josh had suffered paralysis from the neck down.

His family said Josh immediately realized something was seriously wrong and told his wife that he believed he had broken his neck.

Despite the devastating diagnosis, loved ones say Josh has remained strong and positive while beginning the difficult journey toward recovery.

“He has always been the person who steps up when someone needs help,” his family said.

Josh’s wife and five children are now standing beside him as he faces months or years of rehabilitation, therapy and medical challenges.

A family fundraiser has been created to help cover his ongoing medical expenses and recovery needs.

“The road ahead will be long, and the recovery will not be easy, but we’re holding on to hope,” his family shared.

For many who witnessed what happened, Josh’s actions represent the best of humanity — a father who saw a child in danger and chose to help, even without thinking about the risks to himself.

His injuries changed his life in a moment.

But his courage will be remembered for a lifetime.
