San Diego Mother Loses Both Arms and Legs After Routine Checkup Reveals Life-Threatening Aortic Tear

SAN DIEGO, California — A routine heart checkup turned into a devastating medical emergency for 41-year-old Leslie Caoili, a competitive strength athlete and mother of two who ultimately lost both arms and both legs following complications from emergency surgery.

Caoili had gone to the doctor expecting an ordinary checkup in May. Instead, physicians discovered that she had suffered a dangerous tear in her aorta, the body’s main artery.

Doctors told her husband, Lee Caoili, that the condition was so serious that she could have had only hours to live without immediate treatment. She was rushed into an emergency operation that lasted approximately eight and a half hours.

Emergency Surgery Saved Her Life

The surgery successfully repaired the aortic tear, but Caoili’s ordeal was far from over.

In the weeks following the operation, blood flow to her hands and feet was severely compromised.

Her husband said the couple initially did not know how her body would respond to the surgery. But as the condition progressed, her hands and feet became increasingly damaged.

Eventually, the tissue was so severely affected that doctors had to amputate her limbs.

Caoili ultimately lost both legs and both arms, with her hands amputated around the mid-forearm.

From Competitive Athlete to Life-Changing Recovery

Before the medical emergency, Caoili was described as a healthy and active woman who competed as a strength athlete in the San Diego area.

Her sudden transformation has been devastating for her family.

Her husband said that every day since the emergency has been a battle as Leslie adjusts to an entirely different life.

Despite everything she has endured, her family says she remains determined to return home and rebuild her life.

Family Preparing Their Home

After months in the hospital, Caoili is expected to eventually return home to her husband, two daughters and their dog.

But their house is not currently equipped for someone who has lost all four limbs.

Lee is now asking skilled volunteers and members of the community to help modify the property before Leslie is discharged.

The family needs assistance with work including carpentry, electrical work, HVAC, roofing, flooring and painting.

The goal is to transform the home into a safe and accessible environment where Leslie can move around as independently as possible.

“She Just Wants to Come Home”

For her husband, the home renovation is about much more than construction.

He wants his wife to be able to return to the people and animals she loves and begin rebuilding a sense of normality.

“She just wants to come home to her family and her kids and her dog and me,” Lee said.

The family is relying heavily on community support as they prepare for the enormous changes ahead.

A New Fight Begins

Caoili’s story began with what appeared to be a routine medical appointment and quickly became a fight for her life.

The emergency surgery saved her from a potentially fatal aortic tear, but the complications that followed permanently changed her physical abilities.

Now, after months in the hospital, her family is focused on the next stage: bringing her home and creating an environment where she can live as safely and independently as possible.

For Leslie, surviving the original medical emergency was only the beginning. Her family hopes that with support from their community, she can eventually move forward and build a new life after an unimaginable series of medical complications.
